Holmdel Police Capt. Frank Allocco said that "it appears it was a medical emergency" involving the Shamrock Coach driver, who left his lane, crossed over the oncoming lane, and hit a wooden pole carrying cable and telephone wires.

The school bus was transporting Keansburg JV and Varsity Football Players to a 10 a.m. scrimmage against Holmdel at Roggy Field, according to a parent at the scene.

Shawn Alt of Keansburg rushed to the scene after his son, Dylan, called on his cellphone to report what happened. Dylan was unhurt. Dylan said the players were involved in conversation when suddenly they became aware they hit something.

A Bethany Road resident, Anna Pruscino, watched the police officers around the scene of the tilting pole next to the school bus, which has run aground on the grass.

"I didn't hear no impact, nothing," she said. "I saw the traffic stop, and I wondered what was going on. I wanted to see if I could help."

Ptl. James Archinaco of the Holmdel Police Traffic Safety Unit is investigating the accident. He was assisted by Sgt. Vincent Imperato, Ptl. John Allen, Ptl. William Bernard and Ptl. Michael Moore.

Holmdel First Aid and MONOC Paramedics responded for medical treatment and transport. Verizon responded to repair the pole.
