Traffic Safety Report from the June Neighborhood Watch Captains' Meeting

Released June 16 by the Holmdel Police Dept.

Traffic Safety / Crime Prevention  –  Patrolman Robert Philhower:

  • May Statistics:
    • 17 DWI arrests (4 under 21 years of age)
    • 52 Collisions (259 year-to-date)
    • 15 motor vehicle injuries (51 year-to-date)
    • 10 vehicle hit-and-run year-to-date
  • The Township will be receiving six new “Deer Warning” signs which will be placed along Routes 34 and 35.
  • Patrolman Jon Martin recently received an award from M.A.D.D. (Mothers Against Drunk Driving) for arresting 15 drunk drivers in 2010 (the most in the county for a department with 25-50 officers).
  • The Traffic Safety Unit was awarded second place for their entry in the “NJ Law Enforcement Challenge.”
  • The Department did not receive a “Click-it or Ticket” grant this year.  However, during the period the program ran (May 23-June 5) Holmdel Officers issued 145 summonses for seatbelt and child seat violations.
  • Sudden Impact Program:  This program is required for High School juniors and seniors in order to attend their proms.  It was held at Holmdel High School in June, with speakers and activities to highlight the dangers of drinking and driving.
  • “Don’t Press Send Until The Ride Ends” is a video produced by Holmdel High School students, which won 1st place in the competition they entered.  The Holmdel Police, Fire, and First Aid all assisted in the making of the video.  The school won first place, and the price is a driving simulator for the school.  (Sergeant Pigott showed the video at the end of the meeting.)

A question was raised about cameras installed at traffic lights in town. Ptl. Philhower advised that there are no cameras on the traffic lights, and the unit in question is a traffic sensor.

A complaint was made about brush on Catbird Alley and Crawfords Corner Road which is encroaching on the roadway.  Ptl. Philhower will follow-up.
