Police: Keansburg Man Stole $10 in Coins From Car

Andrew Schacht faces additional charges after allegedly breaking into cars in Village Green.

A 21-year-old Keansburg man who allegedly broke into cars in the Village Green Condo Complex off of Clark Street in Hazlet on Wednesday, March 13 faces additional charges stemming from the incident.

Initially, Andrew Schacht was arrested and charged with burglarizing a 1998 Ford and taking an iPad, according to court documents filed Thursday, March 14. Schacht now also faces charges of breaking into a 1998 Chevy and taking $10 in coins from that vehicle, according to an arrest warrant filed Thursday, March 21.

The Hazlet Township Police Department received a call from a Village Green resident at about 5:30 a.m. on March 13 reporting a man seen entering a parked vehicle, according to Chief James Broderick.

The man fled the area and a description was sent out to area patrol cars. Sgt. Ted Wittke was in the area and observed a taxi pulling away from a parked position along Clark Street. Wittke immediately pulled the taxi over and saw a passenger matching the description of the subject seen entering cars at Village Green, according to Broderick. 

The man, identified as Schacht, was found in possession of a backpack that contained items taken from the parked vehicles, including a large amount of cash and change, cell phones, an iPad, gift cards, sunglasses, jewelry and electronic games.

Schacht was remanded to the Monmouth County Correctional Facility in lieu of $10,000 bail.
