Police: Keansburg Man Burglarized Several Cars Overnight at Village Green

Police caught the individual as he tried to catch a cab off of Clark Street.

A Keansburg man is facing burglary and theft charges after he allegedly broke into several cars parked in the Village Green Condo Complex off of Clark Street in Hazlet overnight Tuesday into Wednesday morning.

The Hazlet Township Police Department received a call from a Village Green resident at about 5:30 a.m. reporting a man seen entering a parked vehicle, according to Chief James Broderick.

The subject, upon being observed by a resident, fled the area. His description was broadcast to police patrols, Broderick said.

Sgt. Ted Wittke was in the area and observed a taxi pulling away from a parked position along Clark Clark Street. Wittke immediately pulled the taxi over and observed that the passenger matched the description of the subject seen entering cars at Village Green, according to Broderick.

The man, later identified as Andrew Schacht, 21, of Keansburg, was found in possession of a backpack that contained items taken from the parked vehicles, including a large amount of cash and change, cell phones, an iPad, gift cards, sunglasses, jewelry and electronic games.

Wittke and Ptl. Michael Duncan arrested Schacht and charged him with burglary and theft. He was remanded to the Monmouth County Correctional Facility in lieu of $10,000 bail.

Additional charges are pending, Broderick said. Investigator Jerry Burgos is continuing the investigation.

Police are requesting that any residents in the area that had items taken from their vehicles overnight from Tuesday into Wednesday contact Hazlet Police at 732-264-6565 to report it.
