Hazlet Firefighters Battle Multiple Brush Fires Over 3 Days

Brush fires are common this time of year, authorities say.

Three brush fires in as many days were quickly brought under control by Hazlet firefighters, according to Police Chief James Broderick.

Around 3 p.m. on Monday, a brush fire was reported near Angela Circle, a street off of Union Avenue in Hazlet. On Saturday evening and then again on Sunday, a brush fire was reported off of Middle Road near Raritan High School.

None of incidents are believed to be related at this time, according to Broderick. He added that brush fires are common this time of year, as trees do not yet have leaves to block the sun from drying out the brush.

"All it takes is a cigarette thrown out of a car window to start a fire or someone walking to drop a cigarette on the dry leaves," he said.

All three blazes were swiftly put out by the North Centerville and West Keansburg fire companies.
