Man Hit By Car After Hopping Route 35 Highway Divider Saturday Night

A man was struck by a car in Hazlet Saturday night after he tried to dash across busy Route 35 near the Bethany Road intersection.

Twan Tomas, 30, of Orange Township was taken to Jersey Shore Medical Center in Neptune with non life-threatening injuries.

"He tried running across the highway and jumping the concrete divider," said Hazlet Police Chief James Broderick. The incident occurred just before 9 p.m., he said.

Twan was struck by a 2004 Volvo driven by Kyle Kim, 19, of Holmdel who was traveling southbound on Route 35.

Twan was treated by Hazlet First Aid and MONOC Paramedics before being transported to the hospital. A Medevac helicopter was summoned, but cancelled, after responders determined his injuries were not serious, police said.

The accident is under investigation by Hazlet Patrolman Anthony Forlenza, with assistance by Patrolman William Marvel.

Police Chief Broderick noted that over the years, there have been too many fatal accidents involving pedestrians jumping the highway barriers.

"We had so many on Highway 36 near the Academy Bus Terminal that the State DOT put a fence up on the barrier to prevent pedestrians from jumping the barrier," he said.
