LA Fitness Evacuated After Medical Incident

A patron's difficulty breathing prompted response by emergency services.

LA Fitness in Holmdel was evacuated Wednesday night after a 60-year-old gym member had difficulty breathing.

The gym was evacuated and the scene turned over to fire and Monmouth County Haz-Mat officials as a precaution while the cause of his condition was being investigated, according to Holmdel Fire and Rescue Company #2 Fire Chief John Boyle.

Police, Holmdel First Aid Squad and Holmdel Fire and Rescue Company #2 responded to a call shortly before 8 p.m.

The 60-year-old man experienced shortness of breath after sitting in the spa for several minutes. He was the only person at the gym who reported any symptoms. An investigation revealed that fumes from the indoor pool and spa area may have led to the problem and the situation was remediated, Boyle said.

The man was provided oxygen at the scene but declined further medical treatment.

The Old Village Fire Company, Middletown Fire Department Special Services, Air Unit and Mobile Communications Unit, Keyport MAB6 EMS Bus, Middletown and Holmdel EMS also responded. During the incident Union Beach Fire Company#1 and North Centerville Fire Company provided coverage to Holmdel Township.
