Police, sand and a street sweeper worked quickly to re-open busy Middle Road in Hazlet for the afternoon school bus runs following a hydraulic liquid spill on the roadway Thursday.

According to Sgt. Mura, a garbage truck passing the library / police station complex suddenly experienced a hydraulic leak. Not far away, highway crews were doing work on a bridge that will be replaced this summer.

"It had nothing to do with the work, it was a pure coincidence" said Sgt. Scott Mura.

The road was closed between Bromley and Dartmouth, and reopened at 2 p.m.

Because Middle Road is also County Road 516, Monmouth County crews were dispatched to put down sand to soak up the slick substance. After it sat for an hour, a street sweeper machine came by to sweep it all up, Mura said.

"Hydraulic liquid is like an oil. It's real slippery," said Mura. "So when you walk down the road or got cars coming down, it's real slick." Mura said the truck dropped about a 1/4 gallon of fluid. "It doesn't take much at all," he said.

There are several creeks in the area, but Mura said sand crews quickly responded and none of the hydraulic fluid had left the roadway.

The truck is owned by Republic Services of New Jersey, out of New Brunswick, according to police. The driver was not ticketed, but the company will likely be billed for clean-up by the county, Sgt. Mura said.
