Four Charged in Union Beach Home Invasion After Crashing in Hazlet

The North Carolina residents were arrested in Hazlet following a car accident.

Four North Carolina residents have been charged with attempted burglary in Union Beach after being caught by police in Hazlet.

According to Hazlet police, Shana Batts, 23, of Rocky Mount, N.C.; William Dunn, 20, of Rocky Mount, N.C.; Jami Hamad, 19 of Tarboro, N.C.; and a juvenile from North Carolina allegedly entered a Union Beach home with the homeowner present last Thursday.

According to county records, the homeowner was allegedly beaten by her attackers but successfully fought them off.

The four North Carolina residents allegedly drove off from the scene and were involved in an accident after their vehicle went through a stop sign at Rothbard Road and Poole Avenue, police said. The four were trapped inside the car.

Hazlet First Aid responded to the scene, assisted by Union Beach EMS and North Centerville Fire Company. Further investigation is being done by Officer Maryann Smith.

Dunn, Hamad and Batts are charged with attempted burglary, conspiring to commit burglary and aggravated assault. Each are being both being held in the Monmouth County Jail in lieu of $150,000 bail. Information on what the juvenile was charged with was not available in county records.
