Police Respond to Assault at Holmdel Motor Inn, Make Arrests

Two teenage girls from Keansburg are arrested. One kicked out the window of a Holmdel police vehicle -- and spat in the face of a police officer and a volunteer Holmdel EMS worker.

A Holmdel Police officer on routine patrol came upon a fight in progress at the Holmdel Motor Inn around 1 a.m. Monday.

Officer Joseph Van Pelt's investigation revealed that an intoxicated 16-year old female from Keansburg NJ was assaulting a 20-year old male from Hazlet, NJ. The female was hitting the male with her hands and caused minor injuries that did not require medical treatment at the scene, he said.

Ptl. Van Pelt was assisted at the scene by Ptl. Christopher Cherney and Sgt. Michael Hughes. The female was taken into custody for simple assault and she physically resisted her arrest, police said.

All three had been socializing in a rented room at the motel prior to the disturbance.

While en route to Holmdel Police headquarters the first female began to kick out the rear window of the patrol car she was restrained in, causing significant damage to the car, police said.

Also, according to police, she also kicked Ptl. Cherney several times while being restrained, causing no injury. This female was eventually transported to Bayshore Community Hospital by the Holmdel First Aid Squad. While in the rear of the ambulance this female spit in the face and eyes of Ptl. Cherney and a Holmdel EMS member, causing both to be exposed to her bodily fluids.

This teenage girl was subsequently charged with aggravated assault on a police officer, aggravated assault on an EMS worker, resisting arrest, criminal mischief and simple assault. She was taken to the Middlesex County Youth Detention Center after her release from the hospital.

The second 16-year old who had been arrested for disorderly conduct was released to a guardian.

Stranges was released on his own recognizance pending a court appearance in Highlands.

Both Ptl. Cherney and the EMS member were treated at Bayshore Community Hospital for exposure to bodily fluids and were released back to duty.
