Holmdel Officers Raising Money for Special Olympics

Officers will get the torch on June 7 during the annual Special Olympics Torch Run.

For 30 years, the Holmdel Police Department has run with the torch for the Special Olympics.

On June 7, officers will will pick up the torch from Middletown Police Officers, run three miles then pass it off to Hazlet Police Officers, all in the name of the Special Olympics.

The department typically raises $5,000 through sponsorships from individuals, local businesses and Holmdel PBA fundraisers every year, meaning the Holmdel department has raised at least $150,000 over the year for the cause.

On the day of the event, several very fit men and women of the Holmdel Police Dept, NJ State police officers and Holmdel First Aid Squad members meet up at the Exxon on Route 35 North, at Palmer Ave. They come dressed in Torch t-shirts and pose for photos, anticipating a signal that the Torch is finally approaching.

For the second year in a row, local high school students are invited to run with the officers as they pass the torch to the neighboring town.
