Holmdel First Aid Buys SUV From Township

The former township fire department chief's vehicle will be put back on the road.

Since Tom Savage resigned from the unpaid position of Holmdel Township Fire Department Chief last August and was not replaced, the township-owned Ford Expedition has been sitting in a parking lot.

So when the began looking to replace a problematic 2003 Chevy Tahoe for their squadron chief, they checked it out, and spoke with Savage, who continues his service with Fire Company #2.

"This 2008 vehicle has more safety features, more room and will hopefully not be in the shop as much," he said

They learned the heavy duty vehicle was in excellent condition with only 21,982 miles on it. The Kelly Blue Book value was $22,712 without its all its special first responder enhancements.

The First Aid offered the township $20,000 for it, said First Aid Squad President Mike Nikolis. The sale was approved at the May 17 Township Committee meeting.

The First Aid Squad will change out the decals and put new tires on truck. HFA Chief Bob Bliss will be the primary driver.

The township's two fire companies and first aid squad raise their own money to purchase their own chief's vehicles. The pay the township garage for maintenance services.

Holmdel First Aid has not yet decided what they will do with their current "1850," which is shop speak for their chief's car.
