Holmdel Benefits From Young EMS Volunteers

Behind the scenes, Holmdel has a squad of teens ready for any emergency.

Holmdel Township is benefiting from over 500 hours per month of volunteer hours, all from township teenagers.

The Holmdel First Aid Explorers program, which runs entirely from donations, gives 16 to 18-year-old residents the chance to ride day and night with the squad to not only experience the left of an EMT but also benefit the town with extra manpower.

"We provide high school students an opportunity to give back to the community by aiding Holmdel Residents during any and all “medical emergencies” incurred by Holmdel Residents, and on occasion, surrounding towns."

Chris Trischitta, Holmdel First Aid Squad 2nd Lieutenant and Explorer Program Coordinator, said the program is also associated with Learning For Life at Boy Scouts of America.

Each explorer is required to attend a blood pathogens course, a CPR for BLS Professionals course, 240-hour NJ State EMT-B Training, two meetings per month, 15 hours of shift duty per month and at least 4 community events per year.

The program costs the squad $1,000 for gear, identification and to run the program.

"Every day of the week is covered by assigned explorer ready to help their community," Trischitta said.
