Hazlet Police Blotter: Another Burglary Report; Officer Injured During Arrest

Arrests released by the Hazlet Police Department for June 29 - July 2. An arrest does not indicate a conviction.

June 29: Another Hazlet homeowner has reported a burglary to police. A homeowner on Annapolis Drive, off Middle Road, discovered that jewelry valued at $5,000 had been taken from a jewelry box, sometime between June 25 and June 29. Police said there were no signs of forced entry. The report is the latest in a string of similar burglaries reported since May 31 , such as Lafayette Drive, Colgate Court, Roland Place, Virginia Avenue and Franciscan Way. Police arrested a suspect on Virginia Ave on June 19 for possession of burglary tools and defiant trespass, but the suspect has not been charged for any burglaries. 

June 30: A Hazlet police officer was injured by a motorcyclist in an attempt to arrest the driver for numerous offenses.

At 10:30 p.m. Monday, Ptl. William Marvel took note of a male driver and female passenger on a motorcyle, both allegedly driving without helmets. His attempt to stop them failed. Other Hazlet officers caught up with the pair in Union Beach, at Cambridge and Union Ave., but the motorcylist again failed to stop at their command, they said.

Officers approached the suspect in a residential backyard in an attempt to make an arrest, but the motorcyclist, now solo, tried to take off from a dead stop, lost control of the vehicle at a fence and drove into Officer Marvel, police said. The officer suffered minor injuries to his right leg and left side of his body, police said. 

Police arrested the motorcyclist Joshua Sandoval, 20, of 1912 Bichwood Court in North Brunswick and charged him with eluding police, assault while eluding, assault on a law enforcement officer as well as numeous motor vehicle offenses, including speeding, ignoring stop signs and no helmet. Bail was set at $25,000 with no 10 percent option. He since posted bail and was released from county jail pending a court date.

July 2: George Miquel, 49, of 4 Van Dorn St. in Keyport was arrested and charged by police for drunk driving, having an open container of alcohol in the car, and driving while suspended. Ptl. William Marvel made the arrest after a report of an accident on Croman Ct. in which Miquel drove over a curb and caused front end damage to his car. According to police, Miquel was passed out in the vehicle, with a bottle of vodka found outside the door. He was transported to the hospital by First Aid. 

July 2: A worker at the Buhler car dealership at Route 35 near Holmdel Rd. noted that sometime during the night, somebody had smashed out the rear window of a Jeep Cherokee parked at the lot for service, and stolen a driver's side seat valued at $3,000.
