Gas Line Ruptured at Mill Road in Matawan Wednesday Morning

Authorities quickly respond to gas leak and seal the pipe. The smell was prominent in the area Wednesday morning.

A natural gas leak under Mill Road Wednesday morning was quickly brought under control, say authorities.

The leak at 30 Mill Road was reported to police around 9:30 a.m. According to Matawan Lt. Ben Smith, a road crew hired by Matawan Borough hit a metal gas line while repairing curbs. Nobody was injured, he said.

Mill Road runs between Route 34, across from Strathmore Shopping Center, to Route 79, at the Brass Rail restaurant. The smell of gas was prominent in the area Wednesday morning.

New Jersey Natural Gas was on the scene. According to the Fire Chief Carl Brommer, police are checking houses, and if a resident is not home authorities are turning the gas off as a safety precaution.

NJNG will have to make more extensive repairs to the line at a later time, the chief said.
