Matawan Man Cited by Holmdel Police Twice in One Day

A Matawan man is cited for causing a traffic accident, and later that day, for DWI.

For one Matawan man, Tuesday went from bad to worse.

Around 11:40 a.m., Ronald Karol, 55, of Crest Circle got involved in a car accident at Route 35 and Laurel Avenue. According to Holmdel Police, he changed lanes without yielding to a GMC Sierra driven by William Potter, 58, of the Vista in Middletown. His Toyota Highlanders's front end was damaged and it was towed to B&G Gulf on Bethany Road, Holmdel. Karol was ticketed by Holmdel Police with careless driving.

Later that day, around 6:30 p.m. Holmdel Police were alerted that a possible intoxicated driver operating a silver minivan in the area of the B&G Gulf.

Holmdel Ptl. Jake Savage investigated, and reported that Karol was the one driving the minivan. Karol was attempting to remove items from his Toyota which had been damaged in the accident. "It was apparent through Ptl. Savage's investigation that Ronald Karol was in fact operating the silver minivan under the influence of alcohol," according to Lt. Michael Smith.

His ALCO reading, which measures the blood-alcohol balance in the blood, was .09, one tenth higher than the legal limit, said Smith.

Karol was placed under arrest and transported to Holmdel Police headquarters where he was charged with driving while intoxicated and reckless driving.

His minivan was impounded.
