Bomb Investigation Leads to False Public Alarm Charges in Holmdel

Police responded to the Holmdel Motor Inn during the early morning hours of Jan. 31.

A disturbance call at the Holmdel Motor Inn on Thursday morning led to the arrest of Frank Espen, 48, and the discovery of fake bombs in his hotel room.

Espen was renting a room in the hotel when police arrived, according to police. After further investigation at the scene, police discovered propane tanks and and devices resembling bombs.

The Holmdel Police K-9 Unit responded to the scene, discovering the bombs were fake. A fake bomb was also discovered under Espen's car, according to Holmdel Township police.

Patrolman John Maguire arrested Espen and charged him with creating a false public alarm, criminal mischief and disorderly conduct.

Holmdel police were assisted by the Monmouth County Prosecutors Office and the Monmouth County Fire Marshal.
