A round up of local events this weekend

After Hours Holiday Music Program with the Jersey Shore Festive Flutes

When: Friday, Dec. 9 at 7 p.m.

Where: Matawan-Aberdeen Public Library at 165 Main Street, Matawan

Why: This beautiful flute choir, with piccolo, C flutes, and alto flute, has performed concerts at churches, libraries, parks, and at senior homes throughout New Jersey. The ensemble, led by Marjorie Koharski, will be performing a delightful array of seasonal music that will definitely put you in the holiday spirit.

Christmas Sing-a-Long

When: Saturday, Dec. 10 at 1 p.m.

Where: Longstreet Farm at 62 Longstreet Road in Holmdel

Why: Embrace the holiday season and head to the Longstreet farmhouse for a visit with Rick Garland as he plays the piano for an old-fashioned sing-a-long.

Cost: Free

Chanukah Olive Oil Press Workshop

When: Sunday, Dec. 11 at 10:30 a.m.

Where: Holmdel Fire Company Number 1 at 35 W Main Street in Holmdel

Why: The olive pressing workshop is a hands-on exhibit that demonstrates, with the help of participants, the process the Macabees used to refine olive oil for the golden Menorah in the Chanukah story. While participating in the process, the children learn about the story of Chanukah, the Holy Temple (Bais Hamikdosh) and the evil intentions of the Greeks.

Open Ceramics at Thompson Park Creative Arts Center

When: Sunday, Dec. 11 at 12:30 p.m.

Where: Thompson Park at 805 Newman Springs Road in Lincroft

Why: Relax with an open ceramics event where you'll be able to choose from a huge selection of bisque fired pottery pieces, which can then be glazed and fired. Completed pieces will be available in about a week. It's incredibly affordable at just $6 per person, per hour, plus price of bisque ware. Cash or check only will be accepted. No preregistration required. Children 12 and under must be accompanied by an adult.

Teen Make a Gift Program

When: Saturday, Dec. 19 at 2:30 p.m

Where: Matawan-Aberdeen Public Library at 165 Main Street in Matawan

Why: For students in grades 6 and up. Come by the  library and help make gift jars that will be donated to the Matawan Food Pantry.  Participants will be making “M&M Cookies” and “Friendship Soup.” Time spent making the  jars qualifies for community service.
