Overcoming Seasonal Affective Disorder

For many of us, the winter months are a time of joy and happiness. However, for those suffering from Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), the time is considerably less enjoyable. According to the National Mental Health Disorders Association, approximately 10 to 20 percent of the population suffers from mild winter SAD, and nearly 5 percent suffer from a more severe form of the disorder. Symptoms may include: increased sleep and daytime drowsiness, irritability, and fatigue. It is unclear what exactly causes SAD, but many believe that decreased sunlight plays a major part.

Treatment options of SAD vary, ranging from light therapy to interpersonal therapy. Eugenia Zilber, M.D. of Manalapan, encourages her patients to embrace the holiday spirit of giving. “Donating to food banks, or giving to those in need can be very beneficial for those who are suffering from SAD.” Says Dr. Zilber. In order to help her patients realize all that they have to gain by giving, Dr. Zilber is hosting a toy drive for Operation Sleigh Bells of the Family and Children’s Services of Monmouth County at her office.
