The Needles vs. The Hooks - Which Team Are You On?

Some people say knitting is easier than crochet, and some say the opposite. Which Team are you on The Needles or The Hooks?

Kitting vs Crochet – Which team are you on?

Knitting and Crochet is a skill that fosters concentration, patience, and a sense of sequence and organization, all of which are essential tools for academic success. It also develops creativity, enhances children's fine motor skills, hand eye coordination and critical-thinking skills.. It also teaches a lot of patience and endurance.

Scientific research has been trying to prove for years: knitting, crocheting, and embroidery is therapeutic. It's not hard to get lost in the soothing, repetitive movements of fingers, yarn, and needles. Knitting and crochet has been compared to meditation in the same relaxing qualities it produces.

Some people say knitting is easier than crochet. And some say the opposite.  In my opinion it depends on what you learned to do first. In my classes I teach both at the same time so that the student can determine which “team” they are on.

Two needles, a ball of yarn, and a lot of patience. Learning to knit is not easy!! When I teach I use “the sheep method” Under the fence, grab the sheep, back under the fence, away we leap! This may sound funny but it works.  Casting on the first set of stitches and getting the first row knitted can be a bit tricky but once you get the movement, the rest flows easily.  Knitting creates beautiful sweaters, scarves, and accessories.

Crochet is made by using a hook and yarn. Start by making a slip stitch, wrapping the yarn around the hook and pulling a loop through the slip stitch. Practice, practice, practice is the best method of getting going. Once you have even loops you can turn the hook around and build off the first chain you made. Crochet can be tight stitches or very loose, and can be free form or structured depending on what you want to make.

I’m Team Hooks, but that’s because I started in fourth grade with my teacher Miss Weiss. We started off making long chains, and then moved onto bookworm book-marks.  To this day I still have the very first bookworm I ever made.  But on the flip side I teach knitting to 120 kids a day as a lunch time program in Essex County. So I am lucky enought to get the best of both worlds.
