Lawn Watering Tips from Lawn Doctor's 'Advice Man'

Lawn watering tips to help homeowners through after the recent watering restrictions.

A lot of people might think the best time to water their lawn is at night. But in fact, watering your lawn in the early morning hours, between 5 and 9 a.m., is far more effective. 

The reason why: that is when the wind is down and evaporation is at its lowest.

In my role as the Advice Man at Lawn Doctor based in Holmdel, I have been talking a lot about lawn watering lately, especially following the troubles over the water main break at NJ American Water.

I have been helping our lawn experts, customers and my neighbors with tips to help their lawn back to life.

And watering at night is definitely the biggest misperception—as it actually promotes lawn disease. Too much water can cause shallow rooting and excessive weed growth.

I also advise homeowners to inspect their irrigation system to ensure that the heads are working properly and to install a rain sensor so the irrigation is not going off in a rain storm.

So when you water your lawn make sure to reset your sprinkler or your alarm clock.
