Holmdel Cubs Attend 1st Annual Winter Sports Scout Knight

Cub Scouts from Holmdel’s Packs 131 and 331 trekked north on Jan. 25th to West Point for the great Scout Knight “camp-in” organized by the U.S. Military Academy’s Cadets.  While we checked in, some of the Cadets were brave enough to don sumo suits and let the Scouts try to tackle them.  After being piled on enough times, the Cadets handed the sumo suits over to the Scouts so the boys could take their turns at being tackled by each other.   Then it was onto the Army vs. American basketball game (unfortunately our host Army lost, but our boys had a great time and snacks, of course).  Next up, a tour of the Army Sports Hall of Fame where our tour guide, 1st year cadet Cameron, patiently answered all the questions scouts threw at him.  After a pizza dinner, the boys got some time to run around at our "campsite" on the Foley Center’s indoor practice field.  There was more sumo wrestling, several impromptu football games, and a lot of less structured running around too before lights out at 10 pm to sleep in our tents inside Foley Center.

In the morning, the cadets were eager to wake up the Scouts bright and early for a round of PT (physical training) - most of our boys were still in pajamas as they were rounded to the middle of the field for pushups.  After PT we broke camp and headed for breakfast at the very historic West Point mess hall, a very special opportunity not afforded to everyday visitors.  We enjoyed the scout-named “Best Breakfast Ever” and learned more about some of the West Point traditions.  Then there was Mass at the beautiful Chapel of the Most Holy Trinity which included a special blessing for the Paratroopers before heading home.   Overall it was great to be a part of.  Plus it was entirely run by the cadets who surely have more than enough to do already with their course load and other academy commitments.  Interacting with them was the high point for our scouts, and everyone is looking forward to next year’s Scout Knight!
