Pear Trees to be Removed and Replaced in Holmdel

Pruning and removal will take place on Nov. 7 and 8. Tree replacement will take place the following week.

After damage from both hurricanes Irene and Sandy, pear trees along South Holland Road in Holmdel will finally be taken care of.

According to a news release from the Holmdel Shade Tree Committee, work will be done to prune the remaining trees, and remove several that are in such poor condition that no pruning can help them.

Pruning and removal will take place on Nov. 7 and 8. Tree replacement will take place the following week.

Funding for the project is being provided by Friends of Holmdel Open Space which received a donation this year to support their township beautification efforts, according to a news release.

The pear trees were originally planted in the 1960's with the construction of the Garden State Parkway.

"The new trees to be planted will also be of the Aristocrat variety as they have a much more desirable trunk and branch growth habit than the original Bradford pears which break up so easily in storms.," committee chairman Jenni Blumenthal said in a news release.
