Traffic Snarl at Bethany and Holmdel Roads

Gas company work will continue through Feb. 18.

Traffic tie-ups at the very tight Bethany and Holmdel Road intersection in recent days are being caused by work by New Jersey Natural Gas.

"We are replacing a gas main, a four inch main, to insure the integrity of the system," said NJNG spokesperson Renee Amellio. "Unfortunately the weather has been working against us."

Amellio said the work has ongoing for four weeks, stopping and restarting due to snow and ice weather conditions. The project will continue for the next three to four weeks, she said.

"The completion of the main line will be done sometime by the end of next week [Feb. 18]," she said. "From there it will be additional work along Holmdel and Bethany Roads."

At 9 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 9, Holmdel Road was closed from the Bethany Road towards Bayshore Hospital. Commuter traffic and school buses wrestled with getting through the lights. Traffic attempting to get around the Holmdel Road closure backed up at Bethany and North Beers Street.

Hazlet Township Police were assisting with the traffic flow.
