Only Seven Seats Available at St. Benedict School

Limited spaces left for those seeking enrollment for 2011-2012 school year

While some Catholic schools suffering from low enrollment have had to shut their doors in recent years, St. Benedict School at 165 Bethany Rd. in Holmdel has stood strong. There are currently 514 students enrolled in grades K-8, and only seven spots remain open for next school year, say officials.

"We have a pastor who supports the school, strong parental involvement, an active PTA and school board, dedicated staff, and a good relationship between our school and parishioners," said Principal Mary Ellen Lilly, who has overseen the school for the past 11 years.

Art, music, library, and computer programs are strong and have not suffered budget cuts, as in other public schools, Lilly said.

The Catholic school accepts students from all religious backgrounds. First consideration is given to parishioners, said Secretary Barbara Hotchkiss.

There are two classes per grade level. One of the kindergarten classes usually fills with siblings of attending students, Lilly said.
