Haz Mat Spill on Holmdel Road, Hazlet

Hazlet Fire Department and Monmouth County Hazmat responded to a hazardous material spill this morning.

Holmdel Road, near Knoll Terrace in Hazlet, was closed this morning due to a hazardous material spill between 7:30 - 10:20 a.m..

The road is now open.

A Midco garbage truck leaked hydraulic fluid from an arm used to lift garbage into the truck, according to Hazlet Township First Assistant Fire Chief Tim Murray.

The Hazlet Township Fire Department responded to a call at approximately 7:30 a.m.. Atlantic Response, Inc, a private contractor from Midco, had already begun the initial stages of the clean up.

According to Chief Murray, the road was wet from an early rainstorm, which caused the fluid to spread further than it normally would have.

Hydraulic fluid causes the road to become very slippery. Monmouth County Hazmat was called in and they spread sand to absorb the fluid. The sand was then swept off of the road.
