Five Things you Need to Know Today: Jan. 18

A memorial service, and several information sessions

After a long weekend, Holmdel is back into full swing. Just don't slip on the ice.

1. The Lutheran Church of the Good Sheperd will hold a noon memorial service to Holmdel's Donna Holcomb Myers, a colorful public relations professional known around town for her dry wit, and nationwide for her enthusiasm for the barbeque and pickle industries. Our story  here

2. What is all this about a wind turbine in Union Beach? Ask the chairman of the Bayshore Regional Sewerage Authority, Holmdel's John Colligas, at the Half-Century Club meeting today. Colligas will speak for a half hour about the controversial turbine in layman's terms and take questions. Meeting begins at noon at the Senior Center, but Colligas might not speak until after 1 p.m. Open to Holmdel residents age 50 and older. (Can't make it? Holmdel Patch is hoping to bring you his talk on the website.)

3.  Holmdel historians are still grieving the destruction of the gravestones at Holmdel's Hendrickson Burying Ground by the Beau Ridge Homeowners Association last fall. At a meeting tonight open to the public, the Holmdel Historical Society will discuss the value of old gravestones, concentrating on pre-1800 gravestone art. Meeting at 7 p.m. at Senior Center.

4. CANCELLED this morning, due to storm: Financial aid information session at the high school. This was cancelled last week, for the same reason!

4. One of Holmdel's oldest churches is now vibrant again, and the membership is outgrowing its space. Hear the plan presented to the Planning Board by the Holmdel Community United Church of Christ on West Main Street to expand into the space behind the church, while trying to respect the historic sanctuary, natural streams and old cemetery in the back. Meeting at Town Hall at 7 p.m. Our story is here.
