Five Things You Need to Know Today: Feb. 17

Warmer weather, a long weekend, and so many issues to contemplate...

1. Throw off the wool sweater.  Thursday will be positively tropical, relatively speaking, with warm sunshine and a high near 56. On Friday, the skies will cloud up but we could reach 63. Yours truly will be taking in some much-missed Vitamin D.

2. Schools and town offices will be closed on Friday and Monday for President's Day weekend. Enjoy the break!

3. The Holmdel Environmental Commission agreed Wednesday to offer a screening of Chemical Reaction, a documentary about a small town in Canada that banned weed killer and insecticides due to health concerns. The Sierra Club is providing the film, which is funded by organics advocate safelawns.org. The date will be announced soon.

5. The Board of Education has announced it will have three vacancies in the April 27 annual school board election. The positions carry a three-year term. Deadline to submit a nominating petition is March 8. Election is April 27. As a member of the Board, you get to weigh in on district policies on issues like the one that made headlines late Feb. 16, about teacher tenure reform
