Brass Backflow Preventers Stolen From The Orchards of Holmdel

Metal thieves look to melt them down for cash, say police.

Two backflow preventers were reported stolen Friday from The Orchards townhouse development on Laurel Avenue, said Holmdel Police. One device was stolen at the intersection of Hylan Road and Stagecoach; the other at Hylan Road and Fox Meadow Drive.

The solid-brass safety valves protect drinking water from the hazards of water flowing in reverse from contaminated sources. They are valued at $750 each, according to a property manager. They were kept above ground in lock boxes, but the boxes were not locked.

A check of other backflow preventers on the property showed they were still intact.

Backflow preventers are attractive to thieves for their increasing precious metal value, said Cindy Most, managing editor of Drinking Water and Backflow Prevention Magazine. "They melt them down for cash. In my reporting, I've heard so many angles. Some do it for drugs. Some do it to feed their families," said Most.

There are millions of the devices around where irrigation devices and fire hookups are found, she said, and they come in all different sizes and shapes. They are typically hidden in the landscaping. "If you look around, you will start noticing them everywhere," she said.
