Waterkeepers Demand Thorough Water Testing of Raritan Bay Beaches to Keep Swimmers Safe
What: On July 25th, NY/NJ Baykeeper staff and representatives from the Waterkeeper Alliance will be jump in the Raritan Bay at a Union Beach beach as part of Swimmable Water Weekend, Waterkeeper’s global celebration of the importance of clean water in our communities
Why: NY/NJ Baykeeper is particularly concerned that the beaches along the Raritan Bay are not subject to regular water quality testing because the beaches are not classified as “bathing” beaches, in part because they do not have lifeguards. Baykeeper monitored the non-bathing beaches for two years and have data showing that people do, in fact, swim at them but have no way of knowing if the water is safe because DEP does not require testing. Residents of towns that cannot afford lifeguards should not be penalized by risking their health when swimming.
