Sign on in Support of the Harbor Act!

The NY/NJ Harbor Coalition is gathering signatures in support of the Harbor Act.

As anyone who works knows, sometimes life is simpler working alone rather than in a group!  But done right, the group’s productivity and power can be much greater than the individual’s.  That is why in 2010, NY/NJ Baykeeper joined the NY/NJ Harbor Coalition as a Steering Committee member, working to bring more resources to the NY/NJ Harbor.

All of us in the region know that the New York-New Jersey Harbor – “America’s Harbor” – is an extraordinary environmental, economic and cultural gem.  Our Harbor draws visitors from around the world and is home to 22 million people.  It hosts the busiest port on the East Coast, historic National Parks and landmarks, and is ringed by more than half a million acres of diverse shoreline and critical habitat.

However, access to the water remains limited, especially for lower-income communities, while iconic parks and landmarks are crumbling, and the region’s biodiversity and ecology continue to suffer. Additionally, people often forget that New Jersey is even PART of the Harbor!  For these reasons, NY/NJ Baykeeper joined the New York-New Jersey Harbor Coalition

The solution to the numerous issues facing our Harbor is the New York-New Jersey Harbor Restoration and Reinvestment Act, which is inspired by other successful citizen-led efforts across the country.  The Harbor Act will break down procedural barriers, create comprehensive and efficient oversight, and provide the critical federal investment needed to match local resources and restore our Harbor to truly meet the environmental, recreational and economic needs of the region.

The challenge we face is securing the bi-partisan, bi-state congressional support needed to make the Harbor Act a reality.  Take action to support our Harbor by signing the Harbor Act Petition to Congress today!

We'd also like to see New Jersey stop dumping 23 billion gallons of raw sewage into the rivers and bays.
