Daisy Scouts Visit Dr. Cooke's Medical Office

Daisy Troop #564 goes back in time during a visit to Dr. Cooke's Medical Office.

On Tuesday, January 8th the girls in Holmdel Daisy Troop #564 took a field-trip to Dr. Cooke's Medical Office, which is the little white building that sits right next to Village School on the corner of McCampbell Road and Middletown Road.

All of the girls did a wonderful job of listening to our fantastic tour guide, Art Heath, who explained that Dr. Cooke's medical office was built in 1823, and is the oldest known existing medical office in the United States. The girls were fascinated when Mr. Heath showed them Dr. Cooke's antique medical and surgical instruments (some of which were quite gruesome looking!), and they also asked some very interesting questions such as "where is the bathroom?"....then giggled when they were informed that in those days the bathroom was an outhouse.  :)  After our tour the girls gave a donation to the Holmdel Historical Society, and then assembled and decorated first aid kids to be used for themselves, as well as family and friends.

Our tour guides, Art Heath and Charlie Aaron, as well as other members of the Holmdel Historical Society, volunteer their time to offer tours of Dr. Cooke's Medical Office.  There is no charge for the tour but donations are greatly appreciated, as the Holmdel Historical Society is a non-profit organization and is always raising funds to preserve and restore historic properties right here in Holmdel.  Thank you to Art and Charlie...the girls really enjoyed the tour!
