Bites Nearby: Trinity Restaurant & Lounge

Enlightened fare in Keyport. Just follow Holmdel Road into town. By Kate Johnson

Overview: Trinity is located in a former church and takes a cue from it’s surroundings.  The menu starts offers subtle hints to the Bible and offers everything from small plates to entrees with an old world theme.

Decor: Trinity capitalizes on its history as a former church. Heavy red velvet curtains frame original stained glass windows. The first floor contains the bar and tables separated by what used to be the center aisle of the church. Upstairs, the organ pit is still intact with tables set up in the loft area.

The Drinks: The wine menu reads like “Wines Around the World” as there is everything from Champagne and  Prosecco to wines from South Africa, Germany, France, Spain, and even New Jersey. Craft beers are also a large part of the drinks menu, and have an international flare.

Appetizers:  The menu offers “Small Offerings” (small plates) and “In the Beginning” (also known as appetizers). Small Offerings offer tastings such as proscuitto and figs, marinated olives, and chevre stuffed peppers. In the Beginning offers larger appetizers such as duck confit ($12), grazed pork belly ($13) and fish and chips ($14) all come with a suggested wine or beer.

Entrees: Entrees are broken into “Revelations,”  “Out of the Fire,” and “Pure & Simple.” Revelations features Trinity’s love of seafood and chicken. The “Fiery” Shrimp & Mussels ($21) was full of jumbo shrimp and mussels and came in a spicy sauce that was served over a bed of linguine. Out of the Fire is Trinity’s gift to the carnivore. The Grilled 8 oz. Filet ($34) was served with a soft blue cheese and walnut butter and was grilled to perfection. Trinity’s Pure & Simple portion of the menu is for the diner who likes a simple yet traditional meal. The Grilled Flat Iron Steak ($21) is simply marinated in lemon and olive oil and served with mashed potatoes and seasonal vegetables.

Sides: Range anywhere from Braised Truffled Parmigiano Parsnip Puree to traditional mashed potatoes, all for $7 each.

Desserts: Known as “Last Rites” and for those who cannot decide, the restaurant is noted for offering tastings of different items. The Crème Brulee Tasting had a serving of vanilla and a serving of hazlenut crème brulee ($8) was a perfect ending to a sinfully good meal.

Service: The service at Trinity is what makes this place great. Our waiter was attentive the during the entire service. We were seated right away and drinks and “In the Beginning” orders were taken right away. He was even polite enough to point out that the restroom was co-ed.
