Those looking for their Five Guys burger fix will have to head to Shrewsbury.

The Middletown Five Guys Burgers and Fries location in the Union Square Shopping Plaza closed on Sunday, Jan. 26, an employee at the Shrewsbury location confirmed over the phone. The Middletown spot is no longer included in the New Jersey store list on the Five Guys corporate website.

The Shrewsbury restaurant remains in operation. The reasons for the Middletown closure were not immediately available.

The Route 35 location was home to Baja Fresh before Five Guys moved in.

Easy FIX so that all the businesses can get some more Business. FIX THE GOD DAMN ENTRANCE/EXIT. Its one way in, one way out, then you have to deal with Chapel Hill , tie the entrace into the other jughandle, or figure something out. and Yes, I know its not gonna happen ever.

I was very disappointed to drive by and see it closed. 5 Guys was my favorite place to eat in Middletown and even though I'll be dining at the Shrewsbury location, I'll miss the closer location to my home.

Matthias...good point...right on with that...the architecture and planning is terrible...

The entrance has nothing to do with High priced fast food . Baja fresh was too expensive also . I go to this mall almost every day for 20 years . Fratellis is 2 doors down and you got to wait an hour for a pizza , Which is because they are busy .

Entrance issues aside, Five Guys lost its mass appeal by being named the most unhealthy burger in America.

fspreen, People don't go to Five Guys for HEALTHY burgers and fries, they go to Five Guys for GOOD burgers and fries, which - ask anyone - they really are. Yum! Every Five Guys I see is always busy except, unfortunately, the one in my own town. I never knew why and I never gave the entrance/exit issue a thought since that didn't really affect me.

MY town, I'm a frequent fast food patron and believe me, they're ALL too expensive. A meal at Five Guys costs no more than an equivalent meal at Mickey D's and it's MUCH tastier IMHO. The only place to get a cheap meal nowadays is at the Costco snack bar.

MYtown,I never go our for burgers, but several people have told me that 5 guys food was too greasy.Baja Fresh is great, and I miss the one in Middletown.I do go to the 1 in Ocean,if I;m in the area. Not cheap, but the food is fresh and tasty.

5 guys was greasy also, no problem to me . plus a limited menu . I liked Baja fresh but it was too expensive compared to the local Mexican restaurants in Red Bank . Fratellis and Taliercios are better bargain's with better food in the same mall

Our burgers at Dawg House are amazing everyone should try! We have our own special blend made by La Frieda meta in NYC and all burgers come with fries! We also have amazing weekday lunch specials! 82 Leonardville Rd Belford NJ 732 201 0808

I'm sure the somewhat difficult entering/exiting of the Shopping center didn't help business at 5 Guys but it hasn't affected business at Taliercio's. 5 Guys wasn't anything special and like many have said, very greasy. Never was a big fan. Restaurant was always near empty ever time I drove by. If a business is to succeed in that shopping center during this economy and competitive town in regards to restaurants, it will need to be better than 5 Guys. I can see a Chick Fil-A doing well in that location as there are none in the general vicinity.

Are we too health conscious here in our area. Mcdonalds draws a lot of transients and lunchtime. If I needed a place to eat with my kids , 5 guys would not be my first choice, too unhealthy and limited menu. It's very hard to succeed as a fast food type place when you are 65 ft off the main road sunken down. It was difficult to see for people passing, not locals who kept it busy. Terlercios and the pizzeria have a dedicated local customer base which with the type of food 5 guys had, is difficult. When you combine these factors with a narrow entrance which is difficult to negotiate at times traveling on 35, you have a struggling business.

The township lost a great opportunity to make that center more accessible from the north bound side of 35 when Centrex built the townhouses back in 2007. The planning board easily could have included a jughandle to the layout of that site. But I don't think even that would have helped Five Guys. First there's no drive through possibilities which seems to be a preferred way for people to purchase burgers in this town, just look at the lines for Sonic an inferior burger. Second, the sight lines leading up to that entrance are horrible for a casual non-local driver to see that burger joint from the road. While Fratellis has a bustling business they did have a loyal following before they moved into their current location and I believe had it not they would have suffered the same fate.

I've lived in Middletown all of my life and rarely does anything last in the shopping plaza. Its a shame, I've watched numerous stores I used to frequent, close. Heck I remember when it was a driving range and it was just full of weeds. They need better access to the place or at least promote it better. Middletown just lost a good burger joint.
MCTJim February 02, 2014 at 02:39 PM
Oh and I forgot...the Dawg house does indeed have great food for a quick bite to eat.

Rents in that complex have to be high because always too many vacancies + poor visibility + too large a space + poor complex signage= OOB

There's also one in Parlin on Route 9 next to the Walmart.

I never eat McD or Wendy burgers. I try every new burger joint that opens (cheeburger,cheeburger;5 guys; 25 burgers; smashburger) While they all exceed the basic fast food burger, none are as good as generally get in any decent bar. Give me an Irish Pub with a charbroiled burger cooked in front of my eyes with a pint of Guinness on draught. That's Burger Heaven!

I just found a new place in the area to eat . Claudies chicken .
Jesse February 09, 2014 at 01:32 PM
Lou, I can't find it in a google search. Where is it located and do they have chicken sandwiches and a decent dining area?
Lou DeGeorge February 09, 2014 at 02:40 PM
It's the Sunoco station on 35 by cooper rd. No dining area . I think they did have chicken sandwiches . It's also a small convenience store . Just opened the other day
Jesse February 09, 2014 at 04:45 PM
Thanks Lou. Now I remember seeing the "Coming Soon" sign at the Sunoco. I'll have to give it a try.
