Deli at Holmdel-Hazlet Crossroads Is Expanding

Angel's Deli goes before the Hazlet Board of Adjustment Wednesday night to seek longer hours of operation.

The owners of a longtime coffee and sandwich stop at Bethany and Holmdel Roads, are expanding, and looking for permission to stay open longer.

D & D International LLC, the owners of Angel's Deli at 690 Holmdel Road, will go before the Hazlet Zoning Board on Wednesday night for a modification of a use variance that would permit them to do business from 4 a.m. until 2 a.m. Presently, the township restricts the store's hours of operation from 4 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Zoning boards don't usually tell mom and pops when to open or when to close, but in this case the deli/convenience store sits on a parcel of land that is zoned residential, even though it has been a pitstop for local commuters, hospital workers and kids on bikes for as long as locals can recall.

In July, the Zoning Board of Adjustment granted use variances to allow the building to expand to 3,200 square feet and a change to the configuration of the structure and parking lot, said the applicant's attorney Jeffrey Gale of Hazlet.

"They are expanding and they may attempt to tie in with some kind of franchise whether a 7/11, or a WaWa. I would not preclude it," said Gale.

A county roadwork improvement project at that corner will create a turning lane for traffic going from Holmdel Road, turning right at Bethany Road, said Gale.

The meeting will be held June 8 at 7 p.m. at the Hazlet Township Municipal Building, 1766 Union Avenue Road, Hazlet.
