Costco Issues Voluntary Recall of Peaches and Nectarines

Hazlet store recalls fruit shipped by a California packer.

Costco on Route 35 in Hazlet is voluntarily recalling peaches and nectarines it purchased from a California packing company, due to possible contamination with listeria.

Customers can return the items to the store for a refund.

The nationwide recall of fruit shipped from June 1 through July 12 by Wawona Packaging also includes plums and pluots, but Costco said it did not sell those in its Hazlet store.

Listeria can sometimes cause fatal infections in the very young and elderly, or those with weakened immune systems. Some may suffer a severe headache, nausea or diarrhea. At its worse, listeria infection can cause miscarriages stillbirths among pregnant women.  As of July 19, no illnesses related to the recall have been reported.
