Karneval Celebrated at the German School of Monmouth County in Holmdel

Holmdel culture and language school celebrates the German version of Mardi Gras on March 3

It is was a party for "living it up" before the time of Lenten fasting. Local German-Americans celebrated Karneval, also known as "Fasching," at the Holmdel-based German School of Monmouth County on March 3.

"Karneval is a time in Germany, as well as Switzerland, when people are at liberty to express themselves,"  explained a parent, Judy Musa of Middletown.  The fun often includes political spoofing that includes anointing a Prince and Princess to run the show at a time of year known as the "fifth season."

The party, which included sweets and a parade, was held at their meeting place at the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd at 102 Middletown Rd. in Holmdel. Dozens of children who are learning the German language in after school lessons dressed in costumes had fun dancing.
