Oct. 8: Free Reading of Tennessee Williams' "Period of Adjustment"

The Holmdel Theatre Company presents a reading at 7 p.m. on Oct. 8 at the Duncan Smith Theater -- part of its monthly series.

Holmdel Theatre Company continues its Monthly Play Reading series tonight, Monday October 8, bringing talented actors and directors to the stage of the Duncan Smith Theater to perform unknown or little known theatrical gems -- all for free.  Strong, hot coffee is served as well.

Philip Dorian directs Tennessee Williams' “Period of Adjustment”--a "serious comedy" as the playwright deemed it.

"Minor Williams is still Williams," said Dorian, "and while the play is lighter in tone than his other works, it still captures the flavor of its place and time, an unspecified southern suburb in the late 1950s."

The action takes place on Christmas Eve and brings together two troubled couples, one newlywed and one on the brink of a five-year meltdown.

The director's fondness for the play dates back to when he himself played the part of George under the direction of Paul Barry at a professional stock company.

"I’ve often wondered why it’s not more widely produced," he said, "but I know it reads well because I’ve read it to myself a dozen or more times over the years."

Dorian is confident that he's selected the perfect venue and assembled the ideal cast to put “Period of Adjustment” on its feet.

And while there are no immediate plans for a full production, "the phrase 'never say never' comes to mind" he concluded.
