Holmdel Theatre Company invites the community to a dramatic reading of Kate Fodor's "100 Saints You Should Know," Monday, July 2, at the Duncan Smith Theater, 36 Crawfords Corner Road, Holmdel. The play is directed by Laurie Devino.
The reading begins at 7:00 p.m. and admission is free.
"100 Saints You Should Know" is the story of Theresa, estranged from her family, who works as a cleaning woman in the rectory of the local parish to support her unruly teenage daughter. When its priest, Matthew, leaves the church under uncertain circumstances and returns home to his protective mother, Theresa finds herself compelled to pursue him. One eventful night joins them all, forcing a reckoning with the broken memories and shaken faith that divides them -- and the discovery of a shared, tenuous common ground.
"This play isn't necessarily a religious play, but it explores ideas of faith and longing and the different ways people try to make their lives feel meaningful," said Devino.
"I went Catholic School and even though I"m not religious now, like the characters in this play, I can't help being intrigued by the ritual and beauty of the religion," she said.
Devino, an accomplished actor, has starred in Holmdel Theatre Company's "Our Town" and is currently in rehearsal as Mrs. Brady for HTC's upcoming production of "Inherit the Wind." A graduate of New Actors Workshop in New York, Devino recently appeared in "God of Carnage" at First Ave Playhouse in Atlantic Highlands this spring, and was nominated for a Perry Award for "And Miss Reardon Drinks a Little" at Circle Players in Piscataway.
This is the 5th play in the Play Reading Series at the Holmdel Theatre Company.
