The First Day of Spring in Holmdel Park

Photos of the fog-draped park on Tuesday.

On the morning of March 20, the first day of spring, fog blanketed Holmdel Park.

The childrens' playground was silent, and the birds were making an amorous racket in the woods.

Depending on where you were, the light breeze carried the scent of pine, or the smell of manure from a nearby farm, or the perfume of a flowering magnolia.

In the woods, a fleetfooted jogger effortlessly mounted a packed dirt trail and disappeared down the other side, as a chipmunk scurried for cover.

Nice shots of the park on a eerie, foggy day. The arboretum is a great place to explore. I found chestnuts on the ground last year. I also like the pictured lakeside spot, but my favorite place is a tree-sheltered bench on the near side of the lake. There is some lakeside flora that attracts the fish to the shoreline. I like to sit there in the summertime to read a book, hear the fish splash around once in awhile, and engage the folks walking by with their dogs. There's even a horse-drawn carriage that comes by along the road. I wish the main building still had a food concession. The county ought to consider leasing it out to a professional vendor. They'd have to be environmentally conscious, so litter wouldn't become a problem, but I'd spend money there to have lunch.
