Relay For Life Pasta Dinner Fundraiser in Holmdel

Cynthia Guariglia, a cancer survivor, writes about her involvement with the event.

Surviving a cancer diagnosis is something to celebrate and that’s exactly what the American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life event is all about.

Relay For Life, the signature event of the American Cancer Society, celebrates survivorship where cancer survivors come together to celebrate their journey and to give hope to those newly diagnosed.

Relay is also an opportunity to remember those lost to this disease.

Weichert  Realtors, as a sponsor for Relay For Life, together with Kimisis Tis Theotokou Church of Holmdel, recently held a Pasta Dinner to support its fundraising efforts for this event.

Weichert associates,  family and friends along with church members raised over $1,000 in the fight against cancer.

The Kimisis Tis Theotokou Church has graciously hosted this event since its inception.  Many thanks to all the vendors, volunteers and restaurants who donated their time, goods & services on May 6.

I first got involved with Relay For Life 12 years ago to honor the memory of my sister and sister-in-law and to celebrate my mom and nephew surviving cancer.  Everyone knows someone with cancer.

This disease has no boundaries. As a Relay For Life volunteer, I have met cancer survivors with incredible courage and determination and listened to their heroic stories of surviving cancer.

So when I was diagnosed with LCIS after numerous breast biopsies, I was the one facing a life-altering decision. I did my homework and in 2001 I made the choice  to remove both my breasts in order to prevent invasive breast cancer.

After my many surgeries I would hear over and over again how brave I was to do what I did.

The truth is that I wasn’t brave at all, I was lucky.

Lucky because I had a choice.

The cancer survivors I met along the way made my decision an easy one. They are the heroes. They are the brave ones. I have been honored to know each and every one of them and I thank them for empowering me to take that step without looking back..
