G.S. Troop 1248 Learn Etiquette Rules on Royal Wedding Day

How to hold hold a soup spoon, handle a cloth napkin and other mysteries revealed by etiquette coach.

Long before Prince William and Kate Middleton announced their wedding date, my Junior Girl Scout Troop 1248 had planned a special event.  The Do’s and Don'ts of fine dining.

On April 29, I invited my girls to attend a formal Etiquette class at my house.  I requested that they dress properly and wear a hair accessory, just like the Royal wedding.

I found a perfect etiquette school close by in Little Silver, without having to take a trip into New York City. I booked the date a year ago and hired LauraJane (LJ) Wikoff, the etiquette expert and owner of the Etiquette School of The Northeast

I wanted to give my young ladies an opportunity to learn to be more polished when greeting guests and dining together.  I know they can "text" with no problem, but the question was, could they cut a steak?

When they arrived LJ greeted each guest and welcomed them.  My Dining room table was set with the finest china, sterling silver, crystal wine glasses (with sparkling punch) and water glasses. I prepared a homemade four-course meal and later served delicious wedding cake (no not fruit cake!).  For almost two hours, LJ demonstrated all the essentials of proper dining decorum. The girls loved it.

Some of the dining tips we learned were: pass all platters, salt…etc. to your right and keep your napkin in your lap, folded in half with the crease facing the table.

Unfortunately, my entire troop could not attend, but the girls that did left with a wedding favor and a wonderful experience that hopefully will last a lifetime. We had a wonderful evening.
