Fishing for Beginners, in Holmdel Park

Monmouth County Park Service shows how to handle the rod, reel and bait.

On Monday, 13 boys who signed up for a fishing lesson at Holmdel Park's lake learned how to use fishing gear, how to identify a fish, and where to cast a line.

The seminar began at 9:30 a.m. and continued under the hot sun until 1:30 p.m. on July 11. Not that they minded much. The boys hooked lot of small Sunnies. One boy reeled in a huge Bass. Boys being boys, they also were enthralled by the sight of a snake near the water's edge. And oh, they captured a turtle.

But at pick-up, the boys had just their poles to carry home and fun memories. They had also learned how to "catch and release."
