Today in History

Perhaps a moment of silence would be in order this morning. On this day in history in 1986, the space shuttle Challenger lifted off at 11:38 a.m. The ship was carrying Christa McAuliffe, who was about to become the first United States civilian to travel into space. The New Hampshire social studies teacher had won a competition to be come a member of the crew, according to history.com.

A little over a minute after take off, the shuttle exploded. There were no survivors.
