County Earns $95K from Online Auction

More than 50 vehicles were sold to the highest bidder.

Monmouth County banked $95,205 in surplus from the property auction held earlier in May.   The auction included 99 items for bid from the County’s Fleet Services, Bridge Division, Buildings and Grounds, Park System and Reclamation Center plus seized and surplus property from the Prosecutor’s Office.  “These surplus auctions are beneficial for both the County and our residents, who are attaining these items for a fraction of their actual cost,” said Freeholder Director Thomas A. Arnone.  The items, including more than 50 vehicles, were sold to the highest bidder.   Vehicles made up a good share of the items in the auction, which was conducted by Auction Liquidation Services of Eatontown. The cars up for auction included a 2005 Cadillac CTS…

Monmouth County Police Academy Graduates Largest Class Yet

Monmouth County Freeholders reported that 127 recruits earned their badges and became law enforcement officers

The Monmouth County Police Academy graduated its largest class ever Thursday with 127 recruits earning their badges. The graduates, who served as police officers and Class II officers, will be dispersed to more than 40 departments within Monmouth, Ocean, Middlesex, Mercer, Burlington and Atlantic Counties, Monmouth County Freeholder Lillian G. Burry said. “It was really wonderful to see this,” Burry said. The graduation was held at Brookdale Community College because the academy could not accommodate the large number of graduates, she said. Burry reflected on a time years ago when the academy was going to close due to a lack of interest and support. “Well, we changed that and we’re very happy to say that,” she said, adding that the academy…

Gov. Christie: Seaside Heights Opening 'An Incredible Day for New Jersey'

Gov. Christie appeared at Seaside Heights boardwalk Friday to promote the Jersey Shore

The Jersey Shore is officially open for summer, Gov. Chris Christie said as he spent Friday morning in Seaside Heights promoting tourism in New Jersey.  Early Friday, Christie appeared on NBC's Today Show, which broadcast its morning news program live from Seaside Heights. The governor later cut a ceremonial ribbon — a Guinness World Record at over five miles long — to officially declare the shore open.  "It's an incredible day for New Jersey," Christie said in remarks. "I'm so thrilled that this morning we're here with the whole country welcoming the Jersey Shore back." After being battered by Superstorm Sandy, many businesses on the boardwalk are open and welcoming customers, though others continue to make repairs. Despite some grey …

Hurricane Sandy

Officials: As Rebuilding Continues, Shore is Open for Business

DEP Commissioner: side scan sonar used to detect sunken debris; Tourism Commissioner: rental market is healthy

Though immense devastation from Superstorm Sandy remains visible up and down the New Jersey coastline, beaches, boardwalks and even rental homes are ready for the annual influx of summer tourists that will begin this weekend, officials said Thursday at the annual "State of the Shore" event in Belmar. The State of the Shore report is presented by state officials and the New Jersey Sea Grant Consortium every year before Memorial Day weekend kicks off, but this year it evolved to mark the unofficial reopening of the Shore area following Sandy. With emergency repairs to state and local infrastructure damaged by the storm now complete, work has started on the state's long term recovery, said Bob Martin, commissioner of the state Department of …

What part of what was said don't you comprehend? It was stated that "Over 75% of our rentals are going to be available this summer". It didn't say they were rented.   more ›

Alcatel-Lucent Application Moves A Step Closer to Public Hearing

The Planning Board authorized completeness waivers for the application, in order to efficiently move the application through.

The Holmdel Planning Board approved application completeness waivers for Somerset Developers regarding the Alacatel-Lucent project, bringing it one step closer to an official public hearing. A completeness waiver, granted at the May 14 meeting, does not absolve the developer of providing the necessary information, it just allowed the Planning Board to schedule a hearing regarding the application in temporary absence of the materials. Some information will be mandatory as a condition of approval, such as environmental constraint maps, sewer capacity and traffic information. The waiver still allowed the Planning Board at a later date to ask for any information it feels is pertinent to the application. Somerset Developers said it will comply …

Oklahoma: Don't Visit, But Please Send Cash

Oklahoma urges out-of-state residents not to mail or truck in supplies, but would appreciate charitable contributions

Oklahoma and FEMA officials are asking those who want to help tornado victims to make charitable contributions, but not to mail or truck in any supplies. Even as Oklahoma officials are emphasizing how much they appreciate that folks from out-of-state want to roll truckloads of supplies into the tornado-ravaged area of the state, they have to politely decline because it would divert attention from handling the ongoing crisis and possibly create a mountain of items no one will want. "Please don't send used clothes or supplies and, no, we can't have trucks coming in," said Ann Dee Lee, a volunteer helping the Oklahoma Office of Emergency Management's public relations department field media calls. On Tuesday, plans were brewing among Jersey …

Database Provides Information on 31,000 Flood and Salvage-Titled Vehicles

The state urges customers to consult the database before buying a car

The State Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC) and Division of Consumer Affairs (DCA) are urging all customers to consult their database of flood and salvage-titled vehicles before purchasing a car. That database now provides information on 31,000 such vehicles, the State MVC announced on Wednesday. It isn't illegal to sell vehicles with flood or salvaged titles. However, there are specific requirements that ensure potential purchasers are aware of the status of such vehicles, according to the MVC. “Damage sustained by vehicles must be disclosed to prospective buyers,” Attorney General Jeffrey S. Chiesa said. “We will hold car dealers accountable for violating our Consumer Fraud Act if they fail to make such disclosures.” The database was …
