Newark Mayor Cory Booker, who increasingly finds himself on the national political stage, has a decision to make: run for governor or run for U.S. Senate? Booker, 43, said he's considering both, and will make a decision in the next two weeks, according to the Huffington Post. Speculation has swirled that Booker would seek higher office as his political star starts to shine brighter. Party officials gave him a coveted speaking spot at this year's Democratic National Convention and moves such as living off of the same allotment as food stamp recipients for a week garnered national attention. Hazlet Democratic Party challengers Barbara Ronchetti and Jim DiNardo unseat Mayor David Tinker and Committeeman Jim Brady.
The mood was triumphant at the victory party held by Hazlet Democrats at Assaginni di Roma on election night. Former Recreation Director Barbara Ronchetti, and former Pop Warner organizer Jim DiNardo were toasted by supporters for winning their campaigns. Together with Committeeman Joseph Belasco, the Democrats will now have the majority on the split board. The other two members are Republican Party members Michael Sachs and Scott Aagre. DiNardo, with 4,529 votes and Ronchetti, with 4,340 votes, beat Republican Tinker, with 3,960 votes and Brady, with 3,861. Ronchetti was happy to announce the Democrat's new plans. At a loud, festive gathering at Piazza Italia Tuesday night, Republicans celebrated their big win in Holmdel Township. Tom Critelli won a full 3-year term on the board, and Joe Ponisi won a one-year term, which means that together with Mayor Patrick Impreveduto, Deputy Mayor Eric Hinds and Committeemen Greg Buontempo, the Republicans now have full control over the governing body. Critelli, a real estate developer new to politics, will replace the retiring Larry Fink on the dais. Fink, a longtime Democrat Party Committeeman who works for the state Dept. of Environmental Protection, chose not to run again. He had 4,509 votes. Freeholders Curley and DiMaso defeat challengers William Shea and Kevin Lavan; incumbent French best Steinhorn in county clerk bid.
The Monmouth County Republicans will retain a 5-0 majority on the Board of Chosen Freeholders. With 99 percent of districts reporting, Freeholder Director John Curley and Freeholder Serena DiMaso led their Democratic opponents William Shea and Kevin Lavan by over 25,000 votes, according to unofficial results from the Monmouth County Board of Elections. "We are gathered here tonight to make sure that what you have entrusted in us remains and creates the greatest county in the state of New Jersey," Curley said during Monmouth County Republican Committee’s election party at South Gate Manor in Freehold Tuesday night. Voters in New Jersey on Tuesday cast their ballot for Barack Obama, giving him the state's 14 electoral votes.
Barack Obama won New Jersey’s 14 electoral votes on Tuesday, defeating Republican Mitt Romney. In the 2008 presidential election, the state voted for the Democratic candidate, and since the 1990s has voted for the overall winner of the presidential race 3 out of 5 times. Romney and Obama did not campaign aggressively in New Jersey. The state has typically been a Democratic stronghold in recent presidential elections.
