Holmdel Is Finals Bound!

It was really very fitting.  The way it was for most of the season.

Zach Bond, the all time Holmdel leading scorer led his team to a 1-0 overtime victory over West Deptford Wednesday night.

Bond scored in the 82nd minute.  He took the ball from the corner and by sheer will took the ball into the middle and unleashed a shot. Score. Game over.

Goal keeper Mitch Walier picked up his 16th shut out of the season.

Yet, this column cannot end without a special acknowledgement of the play tonight of Dylan Chapman.  Those who follow Holmdel know "Chappy" is just an outstanding sweeper.  He is always where the ball is.  In fact, he makes it look easy.  Mostly defenders are the unsung heroes.  People tend to notice the scorers.   Tonight Chapman was MVP, hands down.  He had several outstanding take aways that stopped shots on goal, the most notable being a slide tackle that stopped a West Deptford forward on a breakway in the final minutes of the game.  The game might have had a different outcome if it was not for the outstanding play of Number 10.

Holmdel is now bound for the Group II finals where they will face Newton.  Holmdel, ranked #10 in the state in the latest Star Ledger poll will be making its third trip to the finals in the past three years.

The Hornets won the Group III Championship in 2010 and lost last year in the Group II finals to Bernards.

The game is scheduled for this Saturday at 12:30 at the College of New Jersey in Ewing.  I'll be there.  Let's really fill these seats with blue and show these players how proud this community is of them.  It's been a long season.  One that started back in August.  And it is the final high school game for our seniors who will be celebrating a magnificent four years playing for Holmdel High School.

Go Holmdel.  Bring home the trophy.
