For the third year in a row, the Holmdel High School Boys Varsity Soccer Team captured a sectional title as they became the Central Jersey Group II champions. Holmdel beat Long Branch 2-0, Monday night at Roggy field and now advances to the Group II semi final. They will play the South Jersey Group II champion, West Deptford, who beat Cinnaminson in penalty kicks.
The game was exciting, living up to what one might expect from a championship game. When Zach Bond scored within the first 45 seconds of the game, it seemed as if it was going to be quite a day for Holmdel. But both teams settled in and played a very defensive game. The refs worked hard to keep the game under control as passions ran high, giving out 10 yellow cards, including 1 to each Long Branch coach. Neither team scored again until the 66th minute when Zach Bond struck for a second time.
With that second goal, Bond has added another title to his name and broken another Holmdel record. Earlier this season, Bond broke the all-time Holmdel goal scoring record. Tonight, Zach broke the Holmdel High School single season goal scoring record with 24 goals.
Meanwhile, goalkeeper Mitchell Walier and his defense have now recorded their 15th shutout of the season. Holmdel's record now stands at 20-2.
It was quite a crowd tonight at Roggy. The Holmdel students filled the bleachers and cheered loudly for their team. Not to be outdone, Long Branch brought two buses full of students to root on the away team. The fans yelled at almost every play. The volume was up at Roggy field. It is so great to see the community for both teams turn out to support their student athletes. Enough thanks cannot be given to Donna Disko who runs the concession stand for hours on behalf of the Holmdel Booster Club.
This was the last home game of the season. The remaining games will be played at neutral sites. The time and place for the next game, which will be Tuesday November 27th, has not yet been determined. It will be posted on the Patch when it is available.
Ii can't wait to see everyone next Tuesday. Happy Thanksgiving.
