Report: Union Beach Residents Take Issue With Holy Family's $47K Rent for Misplaced Students
NJ.com columnist Mark Di Ionno examines the cost of renting a Catholic school in Hazlet for misplaced elementary students from Memorial School.
Union Beach's one and only school was not spared by Hurricane Sandy.
Memorial School, which serves K-8 students, was flooded with about a foot of water from a small creek nearby, according to NJ columnist Mark Di Ionno.
In an attempt to get the students back to school and in a warm, dry place each day, the district began renting space at St. Catherine's for $27,000 a month, according to Di Ionno's article on NJ.com. The school was too small and soon K-5 students were studying at Holy Family School while sixth, seventh and eighth grade students were taken in for free by the Keyport School District.
Parents were pleased that their children had a place to call their own, however many were appalled with the $47,000 a month rent at the Catholic school located in Hazlet.
The cost is about 25 percent below market value and Holy Family is also paying the utilities and offered the district their maintenance people.

This would be a great time to reorganize the way education is delivered. Internet delivered education by experts is a more efficient and better way to accomplish the goal of educating students. It is a more cost effective way and studies have shown that home schooled students are better prepared educationally to meet the challenges of college. It is time to modernize a system based on an old German model for an agrarian society that serves the purposes of the employees and ancillary businesses more than the needs of the children. Socialization can be handled by sports, arts and community based activities.

Below "market value"? What exactly is the market value of a property that's sat empty for years, mainly because the diocese couldn't make enough profits on it? Between Keansburg, Hazet and Keyport, there certainly were enough students to keep one of the schools open, but the tax-exempt church couldn't make enough money doing it. Now, when disaster strikes, they're more than eager to take Union Beach's money, while Keyport does the human, charitable thing and provides space for free.
