Phone Carriers Waive Fees in Hurricane Sandy Aftermath

Beginning Oct. 29, New Jersey Verizon Wireless customers will not be charged for voice or text usage until Nov. 17

Those affected by Hurricane Sandy may have one less burden to worry about thanks to Verizon Wireless.

Verizon customers throughout New Jersey will not be billed usage charges for domestic voice and text usage incurred between Oct. 29 and Nov. 16, according to a company press release.

No action is required by customers to be eligible for this program, as voice and text activity charges incurred during those dates will be automatically removed from customers’ accounts.

Customers will still be responsible for monthly access charges, however. Customers should also note they may still receive normal usage alerts during their bill cycle for voice and/or text usage.

Verizon will also suspend late fees and will not disconnect services due to late payments during the storm recovery period.

Verizon is not the first service provider to offer assistance to those impacted by Sandy.

AT&T extended a late-payment window for Sandy-affected customers, waiving late fees, and not disconnecting services because of non-payment.

Sprint also offered to waive late fees, overage charges, roaming and call forwarding fees, and renewal extension for prepaid services.

T-Mobile promised to continue providing service to prepaid and contract customers unable to make a payment on their account until Nov. 8.

Verizon Wireless additionally opened several charging stations in impacted areas where anyone could charge wireless devices for free.

“Verizon Wireless continues to focus its efforts to assist customers in the regions hardest hit by Hurricane Sandy,” the press release said.

This is a joke. What should be waived is DATA fees. In areas where there is no Internet (power) the only way to find out ANYTHING from gas rationing to power restoration plans IS data. In 9 days of outage people had to look up shelters, storm info, power info, news, voting info, election results, and SOOOO much more. Our smart phones became our only contact with the outside world in many cases.

At&T said I could either have a total data slowdown on my ONLY link to the outside world or give up my unlimited plan! As I homeschool and my daughter is a senior with college apps due-I caved and gave it up.

If they were smart they would wave data fees, allow is Internet access via tethering and we MIGHT forget we couldn't call out for 7+ days in some areas. That when we lost power we couldn't call 911, or report a downed electric wire. That we couldn't send a text for days! That loading a web page took 20 minutes, but we didn't have a choice.

We finally have cell service back (some do anyway) and can load web pages (sometimes) but now as its our only means of information we get hit of data overages.

Who represents the little guy, who fights for us?

Good old fashioned POTS lines worked the entire time....if you choose to have a cell phone as your only phone service...you take the risk of outages.

Something similar applies to Verizon Fios. I think it's a nice gesture for companies to do something rather than nothing.

I agree with the above comments wave data usage but at least they are waving the late payments most of us have unlimited text and voice so it seems the companies are just trying to make themselves look good. I couldnt text or call for quite sometime since alot of the towers were affected from the storm but how true the phone was only way of knowing what was going on out there since there was no power and still my area has no power.the people who need to offer more help are our home owner insurances!!!

I called Verizon Wireless and told them my situation with using my data and they marked my account to review for the next billing cycle and credit me my overages on my data plan. They were very nice. If you think you are going to go over, just call them, it doesn't hurt to ask.

I would love to see Virgin Mobile do something similar, especially as up until a couple of days ago, I had to drive several miles to even be able to use my phone. (for the first few days after the storm, that distance was nearly 20 miles). But as they say, you do get what you pay for.

Most people have unlimited text and mobile to mobile with weekends free plans...If you already are paying for that then where is the saving?

The phone companies are a for profit business and are no obligation togive anybody anything for free. I feel this is a nice gesture on the part of verizon but the other carriers sre putting nothing of subsrance out there. Waiving the late tee is a joke considering service on att, T-Mobile. And Sprint were spotty at best

I agree with l berman. These companies are national or international companies that are for profit businesses. There is no obligation on their part to waive any fees for anything. Of course I want them to when it serves my interest...I had no electricity, made my payment late and was pleasantly surprised to find they will waive the late fee. Again until it served my interest, I didn't care what they did about fees. After the massive devastation in NJ with out terrible storm it made me wonder about those in the midwest that risk horrible destruction repeatedly with tornados-did we care what fees they are charged there? Certainly is an eye opener.

I too think Verizon is doing a nice thing. I don't have unlimited anything on Verizon and have been getting warnings about my usage, so it is great to hear that those charges will be waived.

I'm concerned at the nastiness and cynicism I see in some of these posts. I understand that you are impatient for power to be restored and the life to which you are accustomed to resume, but civility demonstrates our humanity and can quickly be lost if we don't nurture it. I've been without power since 3 pm on the day of the hurricane and I've not had occasion to be nasty to anyone. Believe me when I tell you that you get a better response when you're tolerant, grateful and thankful. Some of the above posts are embarrassing.

Verizon gouged everyone else. I had to call 911 and I got the following message "Welcome to Verizon wireless if you wish to make this call please press one to use a credit card or to call this number collect"

People who have Sprint and AT&T received this message. When everything cools down I'll be making formal complaint to any agency who will take the complaint.

Verizon truly scum!!!!

So Verizon is scum because their cell towers were working while your carrier's towers were down? Seems to me that you should state your carrier (Who you don't mention) is scum because they didn't have coverage after the storm. The 911 should have gone through, but its possible some other technical glitch was causing a problem.

@Robert Eckert

Verizon is abolutely scum. They preyed upon all the other carriers who were down. The governor and attorney general said it is a CRIME. That's how I will address my complaint. Oh and let's put this in YOUR prespective....JCP&L and PSE&G were not able to get the job done so they called in other electric companies. Where is the difference? As for a "glitch" I seriously doubt it.

Verizon didn't prey upon anybody. They had an infrastructure that weathered the storm and their systems were up and running on a fairly consistent basis compared to the other carriers. The other carriers collapsed. If Verizon opened up their network instantly to all other cell phones after the storm (even for a fee), their system would have come to a crawl and their first priority is their own customers. Sorry you were inconvenienced, but it sounds like you're more sour grapes after having your carrier fail you.

Under no circumstance did you receive that type of recording after dialing 911. That isn't even a message you'd receive under any other circumstance, and certainly not to that number. Telling lies doesn't add to your credibility.

I would guess that guess who is either a cable troll or just a bitter misinformed soul!I hate verizon for how they treated me while i worked there.I saw with my own eyes that their Cell service worked before others and as long as you had some form of power your FIOS worked during the whole storm & power outage. They get A+ from me and my family!

If another carrier wants to use Verizon's towers than they have to have a roaming agreement with them and pay to use them. Either their own towers were damaged/down or they had a network problem.. And they don't have a roaming agreement in that area.. How is that Verizon's fault? Seriously people should stop expecting that a cell phone will work in all places all the time.. Outages happen.. Just like power outages.. The carriers will credit you for outage time if you call them... Unless you are a habitual offender that calls asking for credits all the time.. Which by the sound of things a lot of you probably are.. "You need to unthrottle my data right now!" Seriously.. Just be glad that you had any data to connect with the outside world at all.. I mean I wonder how people survived before the age of data and cell phones.... ???
